Joseph Pilates, born in 1883 in Germany, turned his passion for physical fitness into a groundbreaking exercise method. Despite childhood illnesses, he studied various disciplines, from gymnastics to martial arts. During WWI, while interned in England, Pilates honed his method, training fellow internees and creating equipment to help bedridden patients stay strong and flexible.
Change happens through movement and movement heals
After the war, Pilates returned to Germany, where he was recognized as a leading fitness expert. However, he grew disillusioned with the political climate and immigrated to the U.S. in 1926. In New York City, Pilates and his wife Clara opened their studio, attracting devoted students who helped spread his teachings worldwide.
Pilates continued refining his method and inventing equipment throughout his life. He trained many disciples who carried on his legacy after his death in 1967 at 83. His dedication to physical and mental well-being laid the foundation for the global Pilates phenomenon we know today.
